Reasons to Believe 2025

Jae Tillman

Jae Tillman, a proud 1990 graduate of Wyandotte High School, has dedicated more than 35 years of service to the Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS). A lifelong resident of Wyandotte County, she is a pillar of leadership, mentorship, and advocacy in the field of special education.

Jae’s career began as a paraeducator supporting students with severe disabilities at Noble Prentis Elementary, F.L. Schlagle, and J.C. Harmon High Schools. That experience sparked her passion for inclusive education. It led her to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Human Development from the University of St. Mary and a Master’s degree in Special Education from the University of Kansas. She went on to serve as a life skills special education teacher at Coronado Middle School and Gloria Willis Middle School, where she chaired departments, mentored countless educators, and coached cheer and dance teams. Her innovative curriculum prepared students with practical tools for independence, including financial literacy, personal care, and vocational readiness.

From 1998 to 2022, Jae’s impact was transformative. Many of her former students—once disconnected from support systems—went on to become advocates featured in disability awareness campaigns through Children’s Mercy Hospital. In 2012, she was recognized as Star Teacher of the Year for her outstanding commitment to student success.

In 2022, Jae took on a new challenge as leader of the Prepare House and Life Academy. These two post-secondary transitional programs equip students with disabilities for employment, higher education, and independent living. In this role, she oversees operations, trains job coaches, and partners with Johnson County Community College to provide collegiate experiences and dual-credit opportunities. She also coordinates events, such as the annual Prepare House Sale, where students apply their skills through meaningful community engagement.

Her influence extends beyond KCKPS. Jae has mentored pre-service teachers as adjunct faculty at Donnelly College, served on the board of the Wyandotte County Panthers youth organization, and contributes to district-wide practices through the University of Kansas Special Education Research Network and the KCK Special Education Cooperative Advisory Council.

Jae’s legacy is one of equity, compassion, and unwavering commitment. Through every role—teacher, mentor, coach, and leader—she has empowered students, strengthened systems, and uplifted her community. Her story is a testament to the power of education, perseverance, and service.
